CALLS are being made for speeding restrictions – and a duck crossing sign – on a main road through Norton. Cllr Bryan Barrett said: “It is not just Welham Road which has the problem with speeding vehicles, it is also an issue in Beverley Road and Langton Road, so perhaps we need to look at moving the signs there as well to further out of town.” Read the full article here….
We have been extremely lucky to get Andy McDonald, Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, to speak to us and lead discussion on Labour’s transport and other policies. This is a Constituency event, arranged and hosted by North Ryedale Branch.
All members, from across the whole Constituency, are invited. Please do your best to attend and make this a successful event. Andy is a popular and well known public representative of the Party, a heavy hitter. Don’t miss this chance to meet him and discuss policy. Do bring non-members who you know may be interested.
Meeting starts at 11.00 am Saturday 4th August, and will finish at 13:00. Bar, tea & coffee
This is the most important organizational event of the year with election of Officers and Exec, selection of Conference Delegates, Annual Reports, Review of the Constituency Plan and voting on any resolutions from yourselves.
This year we were lucky to have as our guest speaker Richard Corbett one of our elected Yorkshire Members of the European Parliament. Richard is currently Leader of the Labour Group and as it was, if Brexit isn’t stopped, our last chance to hear directly from the European Parliament made it a special and unrepeatable occasion.
Richard’s website can be found here.. https://www.richardcorbett.org.uk
All members were invited to attend and to make nominations for Officer and Exec positions and to put forward resolutions on policy, campaign or organizational issues.
The theme of the talk given by Chris Williamson, MP for Derby North, was Give Peace a Chance. In addition he covered a range of issues includng austerity, privatisation and Europe and allowed plenty of opportuniies for questions and debate. After an excellent meeting he found time to visit the Kirby Misperton Protection Camp with a group of our members to demonstrate our continued support for the local campaign against fracking.
Debbie Abrahams Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. Saturday 12th May, Thirsk. 13.00hrs
Delighted that we were able to get Shadow Cabinet member Debbie Abrahams to come to speak at a public meeting in Thirsk. She addressed the issues of poverty austerity and the failing welfare system and setting out the Labour Manifesto for dealing with them. See Debbie’s Conference Speech. It’s was held at The Friends Meeting House 24 Kirkgate, Thirsk YO7 1PL
This year’s AGM was a great success. Starting with a riveting and highly instructive talk on Brexit by Richard Corbett, our MEP, followed by in depth discussion with many members getting involved. The meeting adopted a Constitution and Plan and most Officer and Co-ordinator positions were filled.
Lindsay Dade, Helen Harrop and Julia Chapman did not stand for re-election. Many thanks to both for all their work since the 2017 AGM, a period during which the Party came on by leaps and bounds. We are delighted to welcome new officers Bryan Barrett from Malton and Norton Branch and Guy Cooper from Vale of York Branch. We still need the following :- Campaign Organiser, Youth Co-ordinator, Trade Union Liaison Co-ordinator and to meet the Party’s gender balance requirements all need to be women.
Please mail firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in any of these.
Thanks for joining me!
